Additional Director General (ADG) of Odisha Prisons Arun Ray visited Berhampur circle jail premises on Friday to take stock of the situation following seizure of large quantity of banned materials including cash, narcotics, mobile phones and sharp weapons from its cells during a raid by police and administrative officials on May 9.
Meanwhile, Ganjam District Collector Prem Chand Choudhary has recommended transfer of arrested former Congress MLA Ramesh Jena from Berhampur circle jail to Chatrapur sub-jail.
The Collector has also recommended shifting of arrested associate of Ramesh and corporator of Berhampur Municipal Corporation, Ranjit Nayak from Berhampur circle jail to Digapahandi sub-jail.
In relation to the seizure of banned items from the jail, Raghunath Majhi, a warder of Berhampur circle jail, has been suspended. Another warder Mangulu Sethi was transferred to Digapahandi sub-jail.
Speaking to newsmen during his visit to Berhampur, Mr Ray said detail enquiry will be conducted and if more people are found involved for these irregularities, action will be taken against them. He also hinted that vacancies of warders in Berhampur circle the jail will be filled up soon.
