The man who led the murderous assault on a biker in retaliation to a minor accident in North Delhi’s Turkman Gate last week was arrested on Wednesday.
Ameen Pehalwan, a local small-time criminal, was among the five men who assaulted Shahnawaz with blunt weapons following a minor accident on Sunday evening. Shahnawaz’s two sons had stood and watched in horror as he was being assaulted on the main street following which he is said to have died on the spot.
“We have scanned local records which revealed that Ameen is classified as a local bad character; he has 17 criminal cases registered against him and has been found to be involved in incidents of assault and harassment earlier, too,” said a senior police officer.
According to the police, Ameen was on the brink of leaving the Capital before information from a local source helped the police ascertain his whereabouts early on Wednesday.
His arrest follows the recovery of the i-10 car involved in the accident on the fateful evening and the apprehending of Salimuddin alias Salim aboard it on Tuesday. Three others, identified as Atif alias Lala, Shahdab Ameen and Wasim alias Bhura, had been arrested on Monday.
“The interrogation of the other accused revealed that it was initially just an argument and it was at Ameen’s provocation that they assaulted Shahnawaz,” said an officer.
Meanwhile, Shahnawaz’s family met Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal at his office on Wednesday. Minister of Home Jitender Singh Tomar and local MLA and Minister of Environment Asim Ahmed Khan were also present during the meeting.
The Chief Minister assured the family of all possible help from the Government.
