President Pratibha Patil, who is in the city to inaugurate the concluding programme of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), arrived here on Sunday.

The Governor, Gopalkrishna Gandhi and Chief Minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, were at the airport to welcome her.

President Patil will inaugurate the event at the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics on Monday morning, followed by an event at Raj Bhavan where she will interact with people from various walks of life.

She will also inaugurate a solar power project at the Raj Bhavan in the evening.

She will be leaving early on Wednesday morning.

The year-long celebrations of the platinum jubilee celebrations of the INSA were launched by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in January.

The decision for SINP to host the concluding event was taken because Professor Meghnad Saha was the first Indian president of the academy in the year 1938-39.

Many eminent personalities from the world of science will participate in the four-day long event, said Professor Milan K Sanyal, director of SINP while briefing journalists about the function.
