Polling was being held on Monday in 46 civic bodies across Rajasthan, in the first major face-off between the state’s ruling Congress and main opposition BJP since the assembly elections a year ago.
A total of 1612 municipal councillors, Mayors of four municipal corporations, chairmen of 11 councils and heads of 31 municipalities will be chosen in the exercise.
Voting began on a dull note in the morning due to biting cold in most of the cities, a spokesman of the Rajasthan state election office said.
Altogether 6,449 candidates are in the fray. Of the 1612 wards going for voting, candidates were elected unopposed in 19 seats on the last day of withdrawal of nomination papers on November 14. Among them were 11 of the Congress, four of the BJP and four independents.
A total of 14,700 electronic voting machines were being used in 6002 polling booths. About 56.97 lakh voters can exercise their right of franchise.
