Two days after the police firing in Tehatta area of West Bengal’s Nadia district that claimed one life, the government transferred the officer-in charge of the Tehatta police station and announced a compensation of Rs. 2 lakh for the family of the victim. “One person from the family of the victim will be offered a job,” Home Secretary Bausudeb Banerjee told journalists at the Secretariat.
A government order for a magisterial inquiry would be issued in a day or two. The sequence of events that led to the incident would be known only after the end of the inquiry.
“The inquiry will look into all aspects, whether there was conspiracy behind the incident, how one police officer (the SDPO) was left all alone and when did the reinforcements reach the spot,” he said.
The inquiry would also look into how camerapersons obtained footage of the police firing, he said. Sub Divisional Police Officer of Tehatta Shailesh, who fired three rounds at the locals, had said he fired in self defence after exhausting all options.
