The Uttar Pradesh police on Tuesday cracked the murder mystery of prominent iron trader of Meerut Sunil Garg, who was also an RSS worker. They said Garg was murdered by one of his customers who owed him money.

Body found in sack

The body of Garg, last seen campaigning for a BJP candidate in the civic body polls on Sunday evening, was found in a sack on Monday morning.

Meerut Senior Superintendent of Police Manzil Saini told the media that Garg was murdered by a man called Basant Kumar, who had planned his murder with the help of two accomplices, Ashu Kapoor and Sushil Kumar. All three were arrested on Tuesday.

According to SSP Saini, the trio had also planned to get Garg’s family to give them a ransom of ₹20 lakh. The police recovered the knife used in the murder and mobile phone which was used to plan it.

“Basant Kumar has an iron welding shop named Kirti Engineering in Nauchandi area of the city. He used to buy raw iron from Sunil and subsequently had bought iron worth several lakhs of rupees from him. But he was yet to pay the sum. Sunil had been asking for his money in the past few weeks, due to which Basant came up with the plan to kill him. In this, he was helped by one of Garg’s employees, Sushil Kumar, and another culprit named Ashu Kapoor,” the SSP said.

Garg’s murder had sent Meerut into a tizzy because he was also a prominent RSS worker of the city.

Traders’ ultimatum

All traders’ groups in Meerut had given an ultimatum to the State and district administration to arrest the culprits as soon as possible. The main city market had been shut by the trader bodies since Monday morning to protest against the murder. Given the sensitivity of the situation, a company of the Rapid Action Force had also been deployed to control law and order.
