A group of pirates robbed eight fishermen at Jharkhali area in the Sundarbans on Tuesday morning, police said.

The fishermen were asleep in two country boats and a mechanised boat on Suryamani canal inside Herobhanga forest when about 12 pirates attacked them at around 2 am.

They looted money, rice, pulses, other food items and fishing equipment besides the engine of the mechanised boat, they said.

The fishermen had planned for a 20-day outing and only three days had passed when the incident occurred.

Personnel from the police and forest department have reached the spot for investigation.
