Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda declared on Tuesday that Pandit Bhagwat Dayal Sharma Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS) at Rohtak would be transformed into a world class medical institute.
Speaking at a symposium on “Molecular Medicine at Translational Crossroads’’ at the PGIMS in Rohtak,he added that the new Department of Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine would be made into a centre of national and international importance.
He said this inter-disciplinary research, training and academic centre would help in strengthening biomedical research to complement diagnostic, clinical, therapeutic and surgical efforts in the interest of patient care.
“Our government has kept its word on turning PGIMS into a University of Health Sciences’’, he added while pointing out that the Institute had been ranked 11th nationally and had been selected for upgradation to the AIIMS level under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana.
He further said that this was one of the three departments of molecular medicine in the country in a clinical setting. “Facilities are being created in the new department for rapid molecular diagnosis of diseases, drug design, genetic screening and development of new therapies.’’
With the new departments coming into action, molecular and immuno-histo-chemical diagnosis would be available for several unique and rare surgical, clinical and investigative conditions which otherwise could go unconfirmed. With these latest state-of-the-art facilities, patients would be benefited immensely as rapid and correct diagnosis would become available to the people at their doorstep at an affordable cost, he added.
Mr. Hooda disclosed that the new department would also disseminate biotechnology education to the schools of the state by setting up a Biotechnology Learning Centre.
He asserted that health care was one of the key concerns of his regime which was committed to providing adequate support in terms of finance, infrastructure and manpower. Two new medical colleges were coming up in the state, one in Mewat and the other in Sonipat district.
