PDP: Afzal’s hanging a travesty of justice

February 14, 2016 02:24 am | Updated November 17, 2021 04:04 am IST - NEW DELHI:

At a time when the government has cracked down on the JNU, the BJP’s own ally in Jammu and Kashmir, the PDP still holds a view that Afzal Guru’s hanging was “a travesty of justice.”

Senior PDP leader Rafi Ahmed Mir told The Hindu that the party would not “deviate” from demanding Guru’s mortal remains, nor will it stop questioning the legal grounds of his hanging.

“Our stand will remain the same, come what may,” said Mr.Mir.

This happens when the PDP and BJP are renegotiating the terms of alliance that could bring them together to form a new government in the State after the former Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed’s death.

PDP’s spokesperson and youth leader, Waheed Rehman Parra, echoed a sentiment similar to Mr.Mir’s saying that since Guru was hanged under the Congress rule, the BJP government should not mind returning his mortal remains to his family.

Expressing concern over the police action in the JNU, Mr.Parra said that the controversial programme held in the memory of Guru was nothing more than an “academic agitation.”
