Pat for security forces

One of the significant facets of the recent elections is that it was peaceful barring a few minor incidents. While the Election Commission ensured proper implementation of the model code of conduct, police officials said “impartiality” on part of the security forces was one of the main reasons for the free and fair polls.

According Deputy Inspector-General of Police Atul Katiyar, precautions taken by the administration, including restrictions on anti-social elements from entering the region, helped to prevent disturbance during polling process.

He said that the police had a clear strategy to curb the flow of liquor, which was usually a prime factor in encouraging violence. There was constant vigil on outsiders, who came to the region for electioneering and suspicious activities were noted and action taken.

Pointing at the action initiated on police officers for dereliction of duty when cadres of two political parties clashed in Kalapet just after the polling, he said such disciplinary action sent out a message that no officer would be allowed to take sides with any party.

He also acknowledged the efforts of the Central forces, which worked in tandem with the local police to ensure security.
