A section of the passengers ransacked a portion of the Howrah railway station near here on Wednesday following the late arrival of a local train.
The railway authorities alleged that the attack was “planned and politically motivated.” The mob heckled railway staff and also ransacked ten ticketing counters.
According to the railway authorities, a Howrah-bound local train arrived 15 minutes behind schedule since all the platforms were already engaged. “The 37232 Down Bandel local had to be controlled outside Howrah station for want of a platform. When it reached the station at 10.18 a.m., some people went to the station master's chamber and ransacked it,” Partha Sarathi Mondal, Divisional Railway Manager (Howrah), said.
Mr. Mondal said the mob also ransacked the VIP lounge and two metal detector frames. “It was a planned attack as the mob beat up the train's motorman and heckled the deputy station manager. An RPF personnel was roughed up when he tried to stop the attackers. The mob was finally dispersed around 10.45 a.m. after a large contingent of RPF and GRP personnel reached the spot.”
He said train services were not affected due to the incident. Nine persons had been arrested in connection with the incident so far.
In another incident, around 50 people who were to board the 12810 Mumbai Mail at the Howrah station complained on Wednesday morning that they missed the train following wrong information given through the interactive voice response system (IVRS). The train is among those whose timings have been changed following the Jnaneswari incident.
