The thatched roof of a temporary fish market at Muthialpet partially collapsed here on Sunday, injuring 15 women and resulting in a protest on M.G Road by fisherfolk, district officials told The Hindu .

At 9.30 a.m., the roof of a section of the market collapsed.

A number of vendors, including women, were caught inside and sustained minor injuries.

They were rescued by the people nearby with the help of police personnel.

The fisherfolk staged a road roko near the Ezhaimari Amman Temple junction on M.G. Road, which affected traffic.

They demanded immediate compensation for those who were injured and wanted a proper roof to be constructed for the market.

A team of the district administration, headed by tahsildar M.S. Ramesh, pacified the agitators, who dispersed after they were assured of immediate action.
