The parents of the Handwara girl, whose alleged molestation led last month to violent protests which killed five civilians, on Tuesday appealed to the government to lift police curbs on the movement of their daughter.
“My daughter is being kept at her uncle’s place in Zachaldara [in Kupwara district] and not allowed to move around. We appeal to the people to put pressure on the government to help release my daughter,” said the teenaged girl’s father, while speaking to The Hindu here.
The girl’s parents claimed that they dodged the police to reach Srinagar. They alleged that the police, on the directions of the SP, did not allow them to go to Srinagar.
“Today [Tuesday] we left our mobiles behind. We sat away from each other in the public bus we boarded in Kupwara, fearing police action,” said the Class 11 girl’s mother.
The parents argued that it was the local community and not the police that could provide them security. “By offering security to my daughter, they are risking the lives of others in my family. In a written appeal to the court too we have pleaded to withdraw the security,” said the father.
