The checking teams of the Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVN) detected 3,620 cases of theft of power during April and May and imposed a penalty of Rs 6.54 crore on the erring consumers out of which Rs.4.28 crore had already been recovered.
An official spokesman said here on Friday that 564 cases of theft of electricity were detected in Rohtak district , 540 in Kaithal district , 512 in Jind, 377 in Ambala and Panchkula, 337 in Karnal, 318 in Yamunanagar, 311 in Panipat, 291 in Sonepat, 200 in Kurukshetra and 170 in Jhajjar.
The UHBVN teams checked 20,823 consumer connections during this period.
In most of the cases of theft/pilferage of power, the consumers were found stealing power by tapping the lines. Cases of meter by-pass, tampering the meters or fake seals also came to light, he added.
The Nigam also temporarily/permanently snapped power supply of 44,584 defaulting consumers. These consumers were defaulters of over Rs. 34 crore, out of which Rs. 19.75 crore had been recovered.
The Nigam would intensify its campaign of detecting the cases of theft/pilferage of power which was one of the main reasons of shortage of electricity, he added.
Simultaneously, the power supply of the non-payers would also be disconnected as per rules.
