A local leader of the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal in Punjab and one of his associates were arrested near the Pakistan border on Thursday, a day after he shot dead a police official who had come to the defence of his daughter when she was being harassed, in Amritsar.

After a major operation, the police arrested the main accused, Ranjit Singh Rana — who shot dead Assistant Sub-Inspector Ravinderpal Singh in full public view — from a village near the border. Two of his accomplices are at large.

The arrest came hours after Rana was expelled by his party from the post of general secretary of the city’s urban unit.

According to reports, Mr. Singh, who was in uniform, was shot on Wednesday afternoon when he was confronted by a group of eve teasers led by Rana and his associates, who had been harassing his daughter for a couple of days.

Mr. Singh was posted in the nearby Gharinda police station along GT road, which leads to the border with Pakistan.
