Orissa’s Panchayat Raj Minister Prafulla Samal on Wednesday said the State government has taken several steps to maintain transparency and to create more man days under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), now renamed Mahatma Gandhi Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGREGS).

“The government had decided to connect all the gram panchayats through the internet to maintain transparency in the scheme,” he said.

Officers, including collectors, of at least 25 districts of Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh attended a two day workshop focusing on NREGS issues here.

The State government has decided to take up the plantation programmes and community tanks through NREGS work, he said.
