Governor of Tripura Tathagata Roy on Friday accused the Opposition of “politicising” the alleged rape of minor girls in Kathua and Unnao by criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi in relation to the cases.
He further alleged that the Opposition along with the “Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI)”, a section of media and civil society have joined forces to put the blame for rapes on the Prime Minister.
Even as he condemned the gang rapes, Mr. Roy asked how can a government “prevent” a rape.
“The two incidents at Unnao and Kathua are despicable, regrettable and condemnable. Having said this, can you tell me how could the government prevented them? Is it possible to prevent a rape...What has the Prime Minister got to do with a rape that has taken place at Unnao or Kathua,” said Mr.Roy.
The Governor was speaking to journalists in Kolkata on the sidelines of the launch of his book on Syama Prasad Mookerjee, founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh.
He accused the Opposition parties of politicising the two rape cases to “despicable extent”.
“In my personal opinion there is cabal consisting of ISI, number of the Lutyens’s Delhi journalists and the secular group who have joined (forces) to lay the blame for these rape murders at the door of the Prime Minister. Is this the first murder rape that has taken place in the country?” said Mr. Roy.
Defends CM
As for his support of the Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb’s comment that Internet and satellites existed in the days of the Mahabharata , Mr.Roy argued that he did not say that there was Internet at that time.
“I have not said that there was Internet at that time. I have merely said that this is a thing worth trying to find out. What I have said is unless there was a prototype of something of that sort (internet) it was not possible to conceive such a thing,” said Mr. Roy.
