It seeks waiver of farm loans in affected areas

Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee on Wednesday demanded that the State government should immediately form all-party committees at State and district levels to oversee relief operations in the areas affected by cyclone and floods.

A delegation of the party led by OPCC president Jayadev Jana, which met Governor S.C. Jamir at the Raj Bhavan and submitted a memorandum, further demanded waiver of agricultural loan of the farmers affected by cyclone, flood and rain.

The delegation requested the Governor to urge the State government to provide tarpaulin, polythene and blankets to all homeless people in view of approaching winter.

The party also demanded provision of free electricity to affected farmers for five years, and house building soft bank loans up to Rs. 50,000 to benefit affected non-BPL category families.

The Congress leaders further demanded that National Disaster Management Authority may be involved to supervise reconstruction works of all infrastructure projects for expeditious completion.

Among other things, the Congress leaders also underlined the need for massive afforestation programme, more particularly mangrove and casuarina varieties along with the coast.

The delegation alleged that the Biju Janata Dal government, which created hype over the preparation for the cyclone to draw political mileage, had miserably failed to cope with the situation in both cyclone and flood affected districts.
