One killed in firecracker unit blast

One person was killed and eight others were seriously injured following a blast at a fireworks manufacturing unit in Itamati area in Nayagarh district, the police said on Friday.

The accident took place one km away from Itamati police station. Ahead of the Diwali celebrations, more than 15 persons were preparing firecrackers at Tantisahi colony of Itamati. The place was also used as storage of firecrackers. At around 5 pm, the godown caught fire leading to a series of blasts. “There was one casualty while eight persons, who had suffered burn injuries, were first rushed to Nayagarh District Headquarter Hospital and some of them were shifted to Bhubaneswar,” said Saroj Sahu, Inspector-in-Charge of Itamati.
