An alleged poacher was killed by security personnel of the National Defence Academy (NDA) post midnight on Thursday. When spotted trespassing, a group of five poachers opened fire to which security guards retaliated, killing one.

“Four to five persons were spotted by security personnel on patrol duties at 1:15 am. When told to stop, the poachers opened fire on the NDA security personnel. In the retaliatory firing, a poacher died while the others escaped,” an official statement said.

“The body was found from the encounter site with gunshot wounds early Friday morning, The identity of the slain poacher was not established,” NDA officials stated.

In a similar case, four poachers were caught at the NDA in March this year and were later handed over to the Forest Department.

Trespassing the NDA premises is also a serious issue, as the training institute has been alerted by intelligence agencies to necessitate enhancement of security measures in the wake of terror threats, a senior NDA officer said.
