Three days ahead of elections to the Assembly, one person was killed in an explosion near the railway station in Dimapur, the commercial centre of Nagaland, on Wednesday morning.

“The blast occurred about 8 a.m. near the railway station. Bomb experts have told us that an improvised explosive device was used and it was probably triggered by a timer. The area has been cordoned off,” Videlalie Zashumo, Superintendent of Police, told The Hindu over telephone.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. The investigation is on.

The victim, Pradeep Thapa, was passing by the area when the explosion occurred. He was killed on the spot, said Relo Aye, the sub-divisional police officer of Dimapur.

Asked whether the incident could have been connected to the election campaign, Mr. Aye said the police were considering all possibilities.
