One person has been arrested in connection with the murder of a woman in Assam’s Lakhimpur district, who was thrown out of a tempo.

Raju Chetia, who was picked up by police on Wednesday on suspicion of involvement in the incident was arrested during the day, sources in the police said, adding that during interrogation he confessed to being in a relationship with the woman for the last two years, but denied any involvement in her killing. Chetia has been arrested under Sections IPC 302 (murder), 376 (rape) and 365 (kidnapping or abducting with intent to secretly and wrongfully confine person).

According to the report, the woman suffered injuries on the head and near the eyes in the incident, which, sources in the police said, occurred after she boarded the three-wheeler to pick up her six-year old daughter from school at Boginadi in Lakhimpur district on November 22.

The FIR had alleged that the woman was raped by four men in the tempo, who gouged out her eyes and injured her in the head and neck before throwing her out on the highway. Based on media reports, the Assam State Women Commission has also taken up a suo motu case.
