: People working in a closed office environment, where there are many computers, are at risk of sustained radiation exposure, which can cause several ailments including asthma, doctors have warned on the eve of World Asthma Day.

Computers emit both low-frequency and radio-frequency radiation, which has been linked to many diseases including asthma, cancer, heart diseases, nerves disorders etc,..

Dr. Sandeep Nayar, senior consultant and head of Respiratory Medicine, Allergy and Sleep disorder of BLK Super Speciality Hospital, said: “It is common knowledge that young men and women working in closed office environment for long hours, like in call centres, are massively exposed to radiation, which can cause asthma. This is a trend among patients that we have been noticing recently.”

“With hundreds of computers around them, these youngsters face the risk of sustained exposure and related health hazards,”.adds Dr. Nayar.

The physicians say it is important to take holistic and immediate measures to ensure that threats posed by large-scale electromagnetic radiation (EMR) are contained and neutralised.

Sustained exposure can cause many people to develop symptoms such as dizziness, tiredness, sleep disorder, itching on the skin, muscle and joint pain and may develop a condition known as electromagnetic hyper sensitivity.

“As per the World Health Organisation, there are around 300 million asthmatics worldwide including 15-20 million in India. A study in New Delhi found that up to 15 per cent of children have asthma,” said Dr. Gyandeep Mangal, senior consultant in Respiratory Medicine, Sri Balaji Action Medical Institute.
