House adjourned for the day after paying tributes to departed leaders
The winter session of the State Assembly commenced here on Thursday with the House paying tributes to departed leaders, including former Speaker Somnath Rath.
The proceedings were then adjourned till Friday without transacting any business.
“The House is adjourned till tomorrow as a mark of respect to late members of this House,” Speaker Pradip Kumar Amat said after the obituary reference.
As soon as the House assembled for the day, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik moved a motion recalling the departed leaders and defence personnel. The House observed one-minute silence for the departed former members of the Assembly.
Mr. Patnaik said the sad demise of the former members of the House and the martyrs was a great loss to the nation and to the members of the bereaved families.
Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh, Bharatiya Janata Party Legislature Party Leader Jaynarayan Mishra, and Communist Party of India leader Adikanda Sethi also expressed their condolence to the departed leaders and martyrs.
The winter session of the Assembly was likely to be stormy from Friday as the opposition parties were geared up to raise various issues to embarrass the Biju Janata Dal Government in the House for its alleged failures.
The recent accident at Bhushan Steel Limited at Meramundali in Dhenkanal district and the killing of a woman school teacher at Tikiri in Rayagada district were the issues that the Congress and the BJP were likely to raise in the House.
The other issues likely to take come up for discussion included alleged failure of the administration in carrying out restoration work in the cyclone and flood affected districts and famers’ welfare.
The ruling legislators were prepared to blame the Centre over non-release of Central assistance for restoration work in the cyclone and flood affected areas till date.
The supplementary budget for the current financial year will be placed in the House on Friday. The session, with 23 working days, will continue till December 26.
