Now, bear knocked down by train in Berhampur

In yet another rail accident involving wildlife in Odisha, a bear was killed and its cub seriously injured, hit by a train near Subalaya in the Berhampur forest division in the small hours of Sunday.

It was in the same area where five elephants were fatally knocked down by the speeding Chennai-bound Coromandel Express on the night of December 29 last.

In Sunday’s accident, said to have occurred around 4 a.m., the 10-year-old mother bear, received head injury and died on the spot. The two-year-old female cub, suffered fracture in both legs. It was first treated at the Rambha veterinary hospital and later shifted to the Nandankanan Zoological Park as its condition was serious, said Bijay Kumar Hota, ranger of the Khallikote forest range, where the accident occurred.
