The Election Commission on Wednesday set the ball rolling for the Assembly polls in five States, with Manipur Governor Gurbachan Jagat issuing the notification for the January 28 Assembly election in the State.

The Governors of Punjab and Uttarakhand – Shivraj Patil and Margaret Alva – will issue the notification for the polls in the two States on Thursday (January 5) for the January 30 poll.

The notification for the first phase of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls to be held in seven phases – from February 4 to 28- will be out on January 10 with Governor B.L. Joshi issuing the order and for the Goa Assembly, where the election is scheduled on March 3 the notification will be issued by its Governor Dr. K. Sankaranarayanan on February 6.

For the 60 member Manipur Assembly poll, the last date for filing nomination is January 11 and on January 12 the papers will be scrutinised. The last date of withdrawal of candidature is January 14.

For the polls to the 117 member Punjab Assembly and 70 member Uttrakhand Assembly, the nominations will be accepted till January 12 and on January 13 the papers will be scrutinised. January 16 is the last date for the withdrawal of the candidature.

In all the five States -- including Uttar Pradesh (total MLAs 403) and Goa (40) – the counting of votes will be taken up on March 4.
