Cracking the whip on private blood banks after the unearthing of a spurious blood trade racket in the state, the Uttar Pradesh government has issued a show cause notice to 21 blood banks for allegedly violating norms, officials said here today.

“The food and drug administration department has served show cause notices to 21 private blood banks, which are flouting norms,” a senior official of the department said here.

The department has also urged the police to register cases under the Drug and Cosmetics Act, 1940 against those arrested in connection with the fake blood racket busted in the city recently, he said.

On August 22, police arrested six members of a gang from Thakurganj area and invoked the stringent National Security Act against them. Pouches containing blood, along with plasma, empty pouches, syringes, fake stamp seals and an authority letter of Chattrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University were seized from them.

The alleged kingpin, Jitendra Singh, later surrendered in a court and was sent to judicial custody till September 8. Meanwhile, 12 “professional” blood donors were nabbed in the University here yesterday during a raid on its blood bank.
