The West Bengal government has rejected the recommendations of the West Bengal Human Rights Commission to compensate Jadavpur University Professor Ambikesh Mahapatra and his neighbour arrested in April 2012 and held in police custody for a night for circulating an e-mail containing graphics of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. “The State government has rejected our recommendations and has sent us a letter in this regard,” Justice (retd) Asok Kumar Ganguly chairperson of the WBHRC told The Hindu on Monday. WBHRC recommended Rs. 50,000 each to Prof. Mahapatra and his neighbour Subrata Sengupta. The government also said that “departmental action against the police officers is not warranted.”
