Nine armed Maoists surrendered in Koraput district of Odisha on Saturday. All of them were part of the Koraput division of Andhra Odisha Border Special Zonal Committee (AOBSZC) of outlawed CPI (Maoist) organization. All of them were residents of Narayanpatna police station area and were active in Narayanpatna and Bandhugaon blocks.

They surrendered before the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Yashwant Jethwa at the Koraput district police headquarter. According to Mr Jethwa these nine were abettors of several cases of Maoist violence in Narayanpatna and Bandhugaon area between 2009 and 2013. They had first joined the controversial tribal organization Chasi Mulia Adivasi Sangh (CMAS) of Narayanpatna and later graduated to the Maoist organization. The CMAS has also become defunct with surrender of its hundreds of activists as well as its top leader Nachika Linga.

The surrendered Maoists said they had realized futility of Maoist violence and wanted to lead normal life. According to the IGP they would be rehabilitated as per norms of government for surrendering naxalites.
