Authorities in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district have extended night curfew in the border district by another two months in view of the prevailing law and order situation.

Night curfew in the district, which is near the Line of Control, has been in force for a long time now as it is one of the most favoured routes of infiltration for militants coming from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

“The District Magistrate Kupwara, in view of the prevailing law and order situation, has extended section 144 CrPC for a period of 60 days from March 11, 2011,” an official spokesman said here today.

According to the order, movement of people in forests and higher reaches of the district, outside the human habitations, is not permissible between 9.00 pm to 4.00 am, he said.

He said such movement can jeopardise the safety of civilians as they could be mistaken for militants by the security forces who predominantly operate at night.

However, in the event of an exigency, the civilians shall carry out torches or lanterns to establish their identity and mitigate the risk of damage to life and property due to mistaken identity, he said.
