A court in Agartala on Saturday sent a Nigerian national to judicial remand after his arrest at the Akhaura border on the charge of carrying a fake visa. The Indian immigration officials detected fake credentials in the passport of Aroegido Jul, 30, during his bid to travel to Bangladesh on Friday afternoon.
Soccer player turned textile merchant Aroegido Jul had visited Mizoram before he arrived in Agartala and was trying to visit Bangladesh through Akhaura border in Agartala. Police booked him under the Foreigners Act for his illegal stay in India.
Police said the visa of Mr. Jul had expired on February 18 2011, but he continued to stay in India on a fake visa.
Mr. Jul was sent to 14 days of remand in judicial custody when he was produced in a court. The court directed the police to inform about his detention to the Nigerian High Commission at New Delhi.
Mr. Jul is the second African national captured in Tripura in the past four months. Earlier, Amadu Kardgo, 33, from Sierra Leone was detained at the Srimantpur border immigration facility in Seepahijala district, about 35 km from Agartala, on May 14. He was travelling with $5000 and some Bangladeshi currency, and was believed to be a drug addict.
