NHRC team visit Manipur

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) team is in Imphal and will meet members of the publlic for three days from Wendesday on human rights violations in the state.

The Supreme Court which had received complaints of extra judicial killings of 1500 persons, had directed the NHRC to visit Manipur. Six random cases picked up by the apex court were found to be fake encounters and investigations are underway.

Human Rights Alert and Extra Judicial Execution Families' Association had demanded a probe into the 1500 cases of alleged fake encounters.

The NHRC team headed by Chairperson Justice K.G. Balakrishnan also called on Irom Sharmila in her prison room inside J. N. Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal on Wednesday. She has been on a fast-unto-death since November 4, 2000 demanding the repeal of the Armed Forces (Special powers) Act, 1958 from Manipur.
