The Uttar Pradesh police have once again come under the radar of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). This time on the issue of alleged rape of a woman in a police out-post by the cops in Sant Kabir Nagar district last week.
Taking suo motu cognisance of the case based on the media reports, the Commission issued notices to the State Director General of Police and the District Superintendent of Police, calling for reports on the incident within four weeks.
The Commission observed that the contents of the media report, if true, raised a serious issue of violation of human rights of the victim.
Reports said that pursuant to non-bailable warrants issued by the District court, a person was arrested by Bakhira Police out-post, in the District on May 26. His wife approached the police out-post later in the evening with a request to release her husband, but the in-charge of the out-post and three constables allegedly raped her. When released from the jail on May 29, the victim's husband made a written complaint with the district police on the incident.
