New safety system for Kolkata Metro

Trials conducted along Dum-Dum – Kavi Subhash have been successful, claim officials

August 21, 2013 11:53 pm | Updated 11:53 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

A train protection and warning system (TPWS) has been introduced to enhance safety in train operations and aid engine drivers along the 25-km stretch of Kolkata Metro Railways’ Dum Dum – Kavi Subhash section.

The TPWS will prevent a train from signal passing at danger (SPAD) by stopping it at a safe distance in case the train violated the red signal and crossed it. The system will also monitor the maximum permissible speed and permanent speed restrictions. The State railways have decided to initially deploy the TPWS on its automatic block systems spread over eight zones by 2015.
