Around 10 new units of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) are set to come up in Gujarat with an immediate focus on coastal areas in phase one, Major General Dilawar Singh, Additional Director General of Gujarat NCC, told a press conference here on Saturday.

For the initial phase, the Central government’s Ministry of Defence has recently sanctioned seven Navy units at Bhuj, Gandhidham, Porbander, Viraval, Jamnagar, Bhavnagar and Navsari, and Army units at Amreli and Palanpur.

Last month, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh reviewed the security situation in Gujarat’s coastal areas and underscored the need to upgrade patrolling apparatus and surveillance technology along the coast.

“The units will be operational next year and will create more vacancies in the NCC. We have received sanctions a month ago, thanks to the accelerated activities undertaken in the last two years,” Maj. Gen. Singh said.

In the next phase, new Army units are set to come up in Patan and Dahod districts.

The State currently has 35 NCC units and plans to take the number to 45 with the new addition. However, the NCC has not requisitioned any new Air units.

Raising concerns over the “leadership deficit” in India, he said, the Gujarat NCC, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Ahmedabad had designed advanced leadership courses which have been adopted at the national level.
