In a second political killing within a week in Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district, four suspected Maoists shot dead a National Congress Party functionary and former member of the Ettapalli Panchayat Samiti on Thursday night.

Ghissu Mattami was at his official residence at Ettapalli town when the intruders shot at him from close range, said the police. He was taken to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.

Mr. Mattami’s wife is the president of the Samiti and his killing in his guarded official residence has shocked authorities.

On May 25, Bapu Talandi, a former member of the Gadchiroli Zilla Parishad, was killed at nearby Nimalguda village.

A year ago, Maoists killed NCP leader Kevel Atkamwar at Ettapalli.
