February 09, 2012 02:27 am | Updated 02:27 am IST - MUMBAI:

A fire in the Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) godown in Navi Mumbai on Wednesday caused sulphur pollution in the area.

The fire broke out around 10.30 a.m. near the FMC market area in Turbhe. “Sulphur powder was stored in the warehouse. It was imported sulphur and the property of Customs. It has been lying there since 2008,” a police official told The Hindu .

No casualty was reported, but a few people experienced giddiness and breathlessness.

“Due to the chemical gas, a few people in the vicinity had difficulty in breathing. They were taken to the hospital, but they are fine now. The fire was extinguished by 3 p.m.,” Assistant Police Commissioner Mujeeb Shaikh said.

Six fire engines were rushed to the spot. A couple of them were kept on standby even in late evening as a cloud of sulphur gas lingered long after the fire had died down, the fire control said. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
