The Pindari and Mandakini rivers in Uttarakhand ran amok, sweeping away entire villages and cutting off road links. Flash floods and landslides have made rescue work in the flood-hit state a Herculean mission, with more than 104,000 pilgrims and tourists evacuated, even as concerns grew over the fate of 3,000 people still reported missing in Harshil and Badrinath.
