Passengers travelling by Ajmer-Puri Express had a narrow escape on Sunday afternoon when two of its coaches derailed near Boinda, about 250 km from here.

The derailment of Ajmer-Puri Express took place between Boinda and Jarapada stations in Angul-Sambalpur Railway Section of Sambalpur Division at about 2 p.m. on Sunday. The exact cause of the derailment could not be ascertained.

East Coast Railway sources said the derailment did not cause any casualties and major injuries. As soon as news of derailment reached, railway authorities led by Divisional Railway Manager, Sambalpur Debaraj Panda arrived on the spot with relief and rescue teams.

“The passengers of the two affected coaches were shifted to the unaffected coaches and the train left from the spot on priority.

Response

Though a Railway Medical Team reached the site fully prepared, no medical attention was required as no injuries were reported,” ECoR spokesperson said here.

The East Coast Railway authorities have ordered a high-level enquiry to go into the cause of the derailment. The report of the enquiry committee is expected to be available within a week. However, the derailment forced authorities to divert, short-terminate and cancel many trains.

The Puri-Sambalpur Inter City Express scheduled to leave Puri on Sunday was cancelled.

Similarly, the Bhubaneswar-Rourkela Inter City Express was diverted through Jakhapura and Jaroli towards Rourkela. Puri-Durg Express scheduled to leave Puri on Sunday was run via Vizianagaram and Rayagada instead of its scheduled path.

The Bolangir-Bhubaneswar Inter City Express was short-terminated at Sambalpur and was cancelled between Sambalpur and Bhubaneswar.

The Rourkela-Puri passenger was also short terminated at Rairakhol and cancelled between Rairakhol and Puri.
