NALCO Employees Central Union (NECU) on Thursday announced to intensify its protest to stop the proposed disinvestment of 10 per cent share in National Aluminium Company Limited.

Protesting the disinvestment move, the Union members held demonstration in front of corporate office of the Navaratna Public Sector Unit here on Thursday.

“Since NALCO is profit making company from day one and has significant contribution for economic and industrial development of Odisha, the union strongly protested the Centre’s decision,” said NECU president Ashok Kumar Das.

He said NECU had already sent a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Mines Minister Narendra Singh Tomar demanding rescinding of the decision.

“The Union will also meet and hand over memorandum to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to push forward the demand for reconsideration of NALCO disinvestment move as it will severely affect the interest of company and State,” Mr. Das said.

Apart from forging coordination among all NALCO labour unions, the NECU said it would seek wider political support against disinvestment in the State.

As per the proposal, 10 per cent shares of NALCO would be divested and it is expected to fetch about Rs 1200 crore at current market prices. Chief Minister Mr. Patnaik opposed the disinvestment proposal saying, “Nalco is a very profit making PSU. I don’t think disinvestment should happen there.”
