Nagaland CM told to hold trust vote

Amid the leadership crisis in the ruling Nagaland People’s Front (NPF), Governor P.B. Acharya on Tuesday directed Chief Minister Shurhozelie Liezietsu to seek a vote of confidence in the Assembly on or before July 15.

The directive came after the former Chief Minister, T.R. Zeliang, staked claim to form a new government, a press release from the Raj Bhavan said.

Mr. Zeliang, claiming the support of 41 of the 59 MLAs, had on Sunday written to Mr. Acharya, requesting that he be allowed to form a new NPF-led Democratic Alliance of Nagaland government at the earliest.

The NPF has 47 MLAs, the BJP four and Independents eight in the Assembly.

Meanwhile, Mr.Liezietsu filed his nomination for the July 29 by-election to the Northern Angami-I constituency vacated by his son.

If he wins, he would become a full-fledged member of the assembly.
