July 14, 2016 01:52 am | Updated 01:52 am IST - MEERUT:

Bahujan Samaj Party's candidate from the Budhana Assembly constituency in Muzaffarnagar district was allegedly abducted on Tuesday night from Meerut, while he was on his way from Delhi to Muzaffarnagar. His car was found abandoned in the Kankar Khera area of Meerut.

Mohammad Arif, a businessman in his late forties, was declared the BSP candidate from Budhana Assembly constituency by the party leadership in May.

According to the police, it could be a case of kidnapping by political rivals. Superintendent of Police (Meerut city) Omprakash told The Hindu that Mr. Arif's family suspect the hand of Naeem, a former BSP candidate. SSP J. Ravindar Gaud said police teams had been formed and raids were being conducted.
