Activists belonging to the All-India Sunni Board held a protest meeting demanding that “objectionable” portions be removed from the Vishwaroopam film, which was released in the state capital amidst tight security, on Friday.
The demonstration, which followed Friday prayers at the Taqwayatul Iman mosque on Nadan Mahal Road, saw protesters chanting slogans demanding that “objectionable portions be deleted” and that the trilingual film be “banned in Uttar Pradesh.”
Meanwhile, there was strong police deployment at theatres and malls where the film was to be screened, although the morning screening could not go through due to a delay in the arrival of prints, sources said. But the noon show went ahead as planned and there were no untoward incidents at the cinema halls.
Senior Samajwadi Party leader Ram Asrey Kushwaha had on Thursday said that Kamal Haasan’s film could be banned in the State if it was found that it “hurt the sentiments” of Muslims and indulged in “character assassination”.
