The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) today said that the city's demand for water increases by about 80 million to 100 million litres every year.
The rapid increase in the demand for water makes it necessary that at least few water-related projects are completed within four to five years, Deputy Municipal Commissioner Pramod Charankar said.
The city now receives 3,280 million litres a day (mld) against the demand of 4,200 mld of water.
The Middle Vaitarna Water Supply Project, which is likely to provide an additional 455 mld is due to be completed in 2011.
Other water projects include two dams to come up on the river Gargai (about 120 km north of Mumbai) and Pinjal (about 130 km north of Mumbai) by 2017 and 2021, and are estimated to supply over 1,300 mld.
The Municipal Chief, Jairah Phatak, said the city falls short of 3,67,779 million litres of water compared with last, the Municipal Chief Jairah Phatak said. Mumbai city has been facing 15 per cent water cut since July 22.
