With a red alert already in place in the wake of Saturday’s riots in the Azad Maidan area on Saturday, the Mumbai Police are leaving no stone unturned to ensure tight security across the city during Independence Day celebrations on Wednesday.
According to official sources, 17,000 police personnel will man the streets of the city. Twenty-five platoons of the State Reserve Police, three platoons of the riot control police and Quick Response Teams were also deployed.
After the August 11 riots, the Mumbai Police Commissioner cancelled the leave applications of the police personnel and called them back to duty. The police have started “nakabandi” at all points and at important places within the city.
Preventive arrests have been made to avoid any untoward incident.
“We are checking lodges, guest houses for the presence of any anti-social element,” a senior police officer told The Hindu .
A heavy security cordon has been thrown around vital installations and all the entry-exit points, the airport and railway stations.
Though there is no specific input about any threat or terror attack, the police said they were taking maximum precautions to ensure that there were no problems.
