Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav addresses an election rally in Moradabad on Thursday.

Referring to the Shakti Mills rape case verdict, the Samajwadi Party chief said: "Boys are boys. They commit mistakes but that does not mean they should be hanged"

Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh, on Thursday, described rapes as “mistakes” committed by boys, leading to outrage among, and strong condemnation by, political parties, women’s groups and the National Commission for Women.

At an election rally in Moradabad, he referred to the Shakti Mills rape verdict, awarding the death penalty to three, and said: “Boys are boys. They commit mistakes but that does not mean they should be hanged.” Mr. Singh went on say that “if returned to power, we will amend the new anti-rape law and also take action against women making false charges of rape if a relationship turns sour.”

Don't you see the problem in your interpretation of what he supposedly
meant? We've a serious problem in this country with literally hundreds
of rape - the definition is intentionally broad and rightfully so. A
significant number of rape cases are due to the undue power exerted by
MEN over women. Face it and accept this fact. Rape is a manifestation
of power, not simply and only a lust that goes into the perpetrators
head. By you twisting a statement from a man who claims to be a
leader, in a state that's steeped with male chauvinists, what you're
creating is a situation where the perpetrator can say - it was a
consensual act and so why must I be blamed. The victim, the woman in
most cases, is traumatized to argue or sometimes dead to even tell her
side of the story. We need strict laws to stop this nonsense, not box
around with kid gloves. It's time MEN took a collective stance to weed
off this absolutely horrific display of the power of your

I am amazed at the way the media twists words uttered by politicians
and common people. Mulayam Singh did not say that rape is a "mistake"
committed by boys. The gist of what he said is, "Girls cry 'rape' only
after a relationship turns sour." Boys and girls engage is consensual
sex when they are in good terms. Once the relationship enters troubled
waters, girls misuse legal provisions and accuse their boyfriends of
rape. That is unfair. What was essentially a consensual act cannot be
termed rape. In this context, Mulayam said that boys too make mistakes
- just like the girls who sleep with them. Girls who do not mind
sleeping around with boys who offer to marry them should not cry rape
and cause trouble to their boys. That's what Mulayam Singh said.

Mulayam said this because chances are there that someday Ahilesh may
commit such mistake. Indian see our great leader.

In the Sakthi mill case the police is aware of the criminals earlier
which made them to arrest them immediately. As the media made it a big
issue the Home minister of Maharastra and the police acted swiftly. If
it is the case how can the boys alone be blamed for this crime. We must
see the rape law with global perception where rapes are not considered
as a serious crime. Not only poor boys are comitting such crime but
indian history says many rich and political leaders are exploiting the
modesty of woman in everyday life. But our Indian woman never
complaints to the police so seriously except their rape. That too with
the help of media and politicians. Hence what Mulayam's statement
should be taken as his personal view and the media should not make
money out of it. An awareness to our girl from the school and in
public places should be created first before enacting a capital
punishment. The existing rape law will not deter the crime to our
young woman but it entice murders to them.

He does not understand, one innocent girl being gang raped by multiple moral lacking, characterless, unprincipled men should be considered as "Boys are boys. They commit mistakes", this shows he is still uncivilized and will remain uncivilized. Imagine the future of India if people like him get elected to the office.

If Mulayamji & Akhileshji has daughter they are well protected. They
will not face situation that an ordinary girl will face. The case of
Shakti mill is no where near the situation Mulayamji has envisaged
( falling in love blah blah ... ). If the victim in Shakti mill case
could have been their daughter the case could have been settled outside
court by goons. This facility is not available for ordinary citizen.
Does the girl does not have self respect. It's very frustrating comment
by a senior leader. Very Sad ! He is indirectly supporting RAPE.

It is not for one rape. They have been found to be guilty for repeated
sexsual assault. In this case i do not think that they are given wrong
verdict.Mulayam singh should first check his knowledge of the case

Mulayamji, it seems like your voter-base comprises of rapists. It is a
very good stand to woo them.

I wonder why people like you are not getting slapped. I'm ashamed to
call myself an Indian, where our leaders are such fools. It always makes
me think that our democracy has failed, and makes me question the
visionary capabilities of people who drafted our constitution.

Hello Mr. Yadav

Those arrested in the Shakti mills are not boys but they are fully grown
men, who are supposed to behave responsibly. It's everybdy's moral duty
to put a check to such atrocious activities. Your supporting such rogues
is an interesting point for the people of India to note.

Don't worry Mr Mulayam you will definitely not be elected to power. Thanks for saying "Boys are boys. They commit mistakes." You are the number one boy that all Indian women should be afraid of nnd Number one boy to encourage rapism.

a cheapest statement in the election 2014 made by Mula-yum!!

Ya boys make mistake, but they have no right to abuse innocent girls life. if they do; then definitely they should be charged

Seems to be a utterly non-sense remark. Sakthi mills case and the Delhi
gang rape case are examples of highest order crime and deserves capital

What? This man has crossed the limits, these statements are not
acceptable. How can he dare it?

How can we even think we elect such people? Mulayam Singh should be
behind bars for such statements.
