Mulayam backs Aamir Khan; sedition cases filed in U.P. and Bihar

In the middle of a row over his remarks on the “rising intolerance” in the country, Aamir Khan on Wednesday received support from Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh, who asked the Union government to engage with the actor to understand his feelings.

“Aamir Khan is a big star and well-respected, and there must have been something that bothered him to make such a statement. It is the Centre’s responsibility to call him and find out what’s bothering him,” Mr. Yadav said.

He also backed the actor’s right to air his views. “Aamir has expressed his opinion. In India, everyone has the right to speak his heart. That is the best thing about Indian democracy...”

Cases of sedition were filed against Aamir Khan in courts in Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh and Muzaffarpur in Bihar.

In his case filed at the Kanpur court, advocate Manoj Kumar Dixit said the actor’s remarks created a sense of fear in society and had the potential of causing communal unrest.

His remarks could be misused to create an impression that India was an “insecure” nation and did not protect its people.

Mr. Dixit had earlier filed a case against the actor for the posters of his blockbuster film PK, citing nudity.

Another complaint was filed by advocate Sudhir Kumar Ojha in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, at Muzaffarpur. The matter will come up for hearing on December 1.
