Faced with a complete shutdown on the first day of the Durbar in the summer capital, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed on Tuesday said restoration of flood-damaged infrastructure and improvement of roads were his government’s first priority.

Shops and business establishments in Srinagar remained closed on Tuesday as Kashmir traders’ body called for a shutdown in protest against the failure of the PDP-BJP government to rehabilitate the merchants affected by the September 2014 floods.

Comes under criticism

The PDP and the BJP, which slammed the former National Conference-Congress government for lack of response to the flood-affected sections, have come under severe criticism for being “completely absent on the ground” and trying to “manage perceptions in the media.”

Geelani under house arrest again

Hurriyat (G) chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani was once again put under house arrest as the government started functioning from Srinagar.
