A high-level meeting was held here on Saturday to examine proposals for building up necessary administrative infrastructure for creating a full-fledged district of Kolkata.

State Chief Secretary Samar Ghosh, who presided over the meeting attended by Home Secretary G.D. Gautama and senior officials at Writers’ Buildings, said plans were being chalked out for building up necessary administrative infrastructure.

Despite being one of the 19 districts of the state, Kolkata does not have its own administrative infrastructure as a full-fledged district nor does it have its own district magistrate or sub-divisional officers like other districts.

Official sources said once developed as a full-fledged district, revenue collection would be smoother and administrative functioning easier in Kolkata.

A preliminary mapping for the administrative infrastructure of Kolkata was being drawn up as a prelude to the upgradation of Kolkata as a full-fledged district.

More detailed discussions would be held to give a final shape to the proposals before these being passed on to the state cabinet, the sources said.

Talks were also held for creating a separate district of Jhargram police district, the sources added.
