The Chhattisgarh police claimed to have killed more than two Maoists in an encounter on the bank of the Indravati river in Bastar district on Wednesday.

“Many Maoists were killed during the gun battle on the bank of river Indravati. It was raining heavily when the encounter was going on and the Maoists were seen dragging the bodies inside the forest,” Bastar range Inspector General of Police S.R.P. Kalluri said in a statement.

The encounter took place when a joint team of the Special Task Force and the District Reserve Guard (DRG) launched an operation in the area after getting inputs about the movement of Maoists.

According to the IG, many Maoists were “stranded” between Barsorr and Mardoom of Bastar and additional forces had been sent to carry out search operations.

“At least two Maoists definitely died during the encounter,” claimed Bastar Additional Superintendent of Police Vijay Pande.

However, the police could not recover any dead bodies. The joint police team also destroyed a boat of Maoists hidden near the river.
